If you can’t handle the truth, do NOT watch this video…

Homesteading off the grid and on the mountain certainly has its challenges but there’s no place we’d rather live. We restored the old camp and transformed it into a cozy home for ourselves, then we cleared more land, built a workshop and greenhouse and spent the late part of the winter starting seeds and now we’re busy planting our first garden on the mountain. Little by little we’re reaching our goals of having a self sufficient homestead.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:

Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.

Propane Freezer:

Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don’t need the heat from the KQ.

We have decided to leave the rat race and move back to my home state of Oklahoma to build our home and start our homestead. My name is Rusty and my wife is Casandra. We first met when I was working as a travel nurse at a hospital in Maine and I knew she was something special. That was in 2007 and we have been together since. It’s now 13 years and 3 kids later and we feel that living the typical 40+ hour work week, running our kids all over town for sports and activities, and the high cost of the “American Dream” has become overwhelming. I have spent years trying to convince Casandra and have finally succeeded. Now we begin our Journey to this new life. We hope you follow along as we take our first steps in realizing our dreams.

Welcome to our channel! We are Kira & Steve and this is our every day life! We are homestead dreaming, bread baking, kombucha brewing, chicken loving, husband and wife duo and parents of 3 littles.

We are slowly but surely trying to become as self sufficient as we can be on our tiny 1/5th of an acre lot! Hope you enjoy the journey as much as we do!
So grab a drink and come along 🙂

Thank you for watching! We really appreciate it!

Ever since I got this thing last fall, I’ve wondered how it would do picking up dried grass cuttings. Well, I finally had the chance to test it out on plain grass, and it’s a great success! Since filming this video I’ve devised a plan, I cut the lawn, take this thing out and use it to collect 3 good size plastic trash cans worth of grass clippings.
I use these daily to supplement the feed requirements here on my little farm, and it’s great! The chickens, turkeys and rabbits love the fresh food, all while it helps me save money on feed costs.

Thinking outside the box when running a homestead is super important when money is a concern, and this lawn sweeper is a perfect example of how to stretch a dollar!
