Survival food is an essential part of your prepping plans. It is important to have renewable food sources, fresh food, access to eggs or meat-producing animals as well.

Still, if it all goes bad you better have some survival food. If you are facing a chemical attack from terrorists or a nightmarish pandemic where you cannot leave your home for risk of infection you better have a way to get food into your belly. The best thing about all that is having freeze-dried survival food that will stand the test of time.

Why are people consistently buying food and putting it up for a rainy day? In the year 2019 people are still putting up emergency food. That is because there is uncertainty all around us.

Preppers are Still Paying Attention

Despite the fact that most people believe all preppers to be Trump-supporters who have hung the gas masks up since he took over, preppers are still paying attention. They are still pushing the pace on preparedness. You should take that both as a compliment and as a warning.

There is never a bad time to buy food.

Grand Solar Minimum

While so much of the media is a buzz about the warming of the planet, changing weather patterns and the GSM are going to make growing conditions very hard on our farmers. You need to be prepared to call on alternative food sources if you find that the prices in the supermarket reach a level that is unsustainable.

It might seem like something that couldn’t happen but I think we will all be surprised over the next year.

Food storage and food in our bellies are one of the most important preps that we can commit to. That is why year over year food storage companies are doing a booming business.

After watching recent events unfold and speaking to family and friends, my wife and I decided to start prepping. Preparedness is a big part of our lives now and I would be honored to share some knowledge with you. Here at SHTF Prepping & Homesteading Central we gather the best prepping, survival, homesteading and DIY articles from around the web.

We are going to need all the water solutions if we reach a point where water is not running in the tap for the long haul.

outdoorlife.com

Water is a problem for which you need many answers. If you see a water solution its almost always worth exploring from filters to containers to devices that pull water out of the air!

can be one of the trickiest parts of prepping. It is crucial to have water on hand, though, if the local water supply becomes contaminated or simply isn’t accessible. The problem with storing water is that the shelf life is typically short, and there’s a risk of chemicals from the packaging leaching into the water.

Filtration and purification systems are good to have on hand, but they only benefit when there is an actual water supply. You should identify a nearby one.

Let’s look at some other options for long term water storage.

Canned Water

There is a product n the market that offers you water with a 50-year shelf life. It’s definitely worth considering and you can stock this stuff up to the rafters if need be. These shelf-stable solutions are great for peace of mind.

Water Safe Containers

Cans aren’t the only thing designed to store water. There are safe plastics that you can fill with tap water and store water for when that time comes. Things like Waterbricks go a long way when trying to achieve this.

If you invest in these build up a little at a time as they can cost quite a bit of money.

Remember that you are going to need about 3 gallons of water per person per day. I know that sounds like more than what you have heard but take my word for it, this is what you want. Don’t be silly and try to undercut your water needs.

Becoming self-sufficient is an essential part of preparing, since there may come a day when we don’t have access to conveniences we often take for granted.

Store-bought cleaning solutions are an example of such conveniences.

It is important to learn how to sanitize your home without the help of nasty commercial chemicals, but using common household items instead. Today, there is a great recipe for an all-natural multi-surface cleaner that just uses common household items.

With just distilled water, vinegar, and some essential oils, you can make an economic, chemical-free multi-surface cleaner that also deodorizes. While the distilled water and vinegar are commonly kept on-hand, essential oils are a good investment.

Essential oils have many uses and long shelf life. In fact, this cleaning solution can be stored indefinitely, as long as it is kept in a cool, dark place.

All Natural Cleaner Recipe

It doesn’t get much easier than this.

1/2 Cup of Water

1/2 Cup of Vinegar

Place all of these items into a spray bottle and shake that thing till it gets frothy and combined. It’s that simple!

Be sure that you label it with some of the things that are inside. This is good chemical control around the home. Everyone in your home should know what are in the spray bottles of your home.

Cleaning Up

Use it everywhere! It’s mostly a hard surface clear but it can be used to clean almost any surface and you can be confident that none of the chemicals are going to make your family sick.

These DIY cleaners and personal hygiene products are such an important part of your household. They are the key to self-reliance. If you can replace chemicals like these there is no limit to what you can start making at home.

Keeping Good Morale with Little Things

Who is in your survival group?

For some people, their survival group is made up of several well-trained individuals who have been preparing for the collapse for years. For others, their survival group is a wife and two small children. Now, only fate could ever tell which direction a survival situation will steer both groups, one this is for sure.

How that group is feeling and what their morale is will be a huge part of success.

While some people think of morale as a groups ability to smile and feel good I often think of morale as they ability to knock out what’s demanded of them and ask for more.

Morale Boosters

There are many types of morale boosters. They are all very important and go a long way in determining what you should have on hand for a disaster.

Caching morale boosters is a great way to store things like candy and maybe even booze. If you have these items strategically buried around your area, it can be a huge benefit to everyone.

Morale boosters dont have to only be things that you consume. They can also be things like communications to people you care about. They can be things like visits to friends.

Sometimes a morale booster can be as simple as a rest. Maybe you have been moving for hours or maybe even days! Sometimes just letting the family or group sleep in or take an hour rest by a water source can make a huge difference.

Be prepared with some answer to the problem of morale. If you think you are just going to soldier on and everyone else in your grip will, too, then you are going to have a serious problem before you know it. We all have limits but we can push those boundaries with some morale boosting

Con Artists and Scams When SHTF

Some of the links below are affiliate links. If you choose to make a purchase we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Not everyone will be out looking to help when SHTF. There are plenty of people who will stoop to new lows when confronted with adversity.

Besides the higher risk of despicable acts such as burglary, assault, and homicide, there is also a higher risk of scams. These con artists would be looking to get close to you and gain your trust just long enough to swindle your hard-earned money, provisions, and/or supplies.

There are many different ways and types of scams. Knowing some of the more common types can help you spot them before you get fleeced. In an SHTF world, bartering may become a survival tactic and many of these scams involve barter exchange.

Just think about our world today. It’s so full of monsters and times are good! They are the best of times!

People who know where you are and what you have are going to want it. They might even be people you once trusted. Everything has changed now. Be sure that you understand that everyone should be watched carefully. Most importantly those close by.

Community is important but dont be nieve in an SHTF situation.

The weak and the ill will be most at risk when it comes to scams like these. If it’s just too easy people are going to take. We live in a nation where needs are met if not by work than by the state. We dont see desperation enough in America.

It’s easy to forget what it does to people. You need to keep your wits about you and be prepared for anything. Everyone should take caution.

Inside-Out and Outside-In: Tracking and Control, or War

Do you need a reminder of why you do what you do? Have you any idea the forces that are mounted against the average person?

Do you need a reminder of what it takes to prep?

For some, this gives them fuel to succeed. For others, it can cause you to want to curl up in a ball and surrender. This is just not an option. What does our future hold? That is the priceless question, right? How much danger are we in?

With presidential hopefuls spouting direct assaults at our 2nd Amendment its a very strange time and it’s unlike any America has faced before. This is a nightmare for us all. Even those who think that a network of agencies governing people’s rights is a good thing.

Self Reliance and Independence

There is no escaping our fate. It’s all part of this deal. You know, we are going to have to forge on as a self-reliant people who are in control of our own security, our own food, and our own liberty. The surveillance state and the radicals in our society must not be allowed to govern our way of life.

Prepping is an affront to all of these ugly plans for a controlled future. People are easiest to control when they are unarmed and hungry.

Now is the point in your life when you make a pact to never be that person. Never be the type of person that is left to cower and beg. We have not come this far as a nation to be people like these. Through self-reliance and independence, we can find that freedom.

THrough prepping we can find that power. Through community, we can make it impossible to take away. Get started now and you wont have to bear the weight of failure.

How to Start a Campfire: A Basic Survival Skill

Some of the links below are affiliate links. If you choose to make a purchase we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Fire starting is obviously an important survival skill. Some of us that live in suburban or urban areas and don’t have the opportunity to go camping as often as we would like, and don’t get enough practice with the skill.

A proper campfire is a blend of science and art- it requires know-how and patience. Adverse conditions and a lack of supplies can make even the most seasoned survivalist frustrated at such a simple task.

Different techniques for fire-starting help with various conditions and resources available. There are also different ways to construct your campfire to get higher heat output, resistance to wind, reliable lighting, or even sustained burn times.

All fire comes down to three important components and if you have access to and know how to manage these components you will always have a fire.

These finely processed materials are what will catch your spark or flame and start the fire. It’s very important that your tinder remain as dry as possible.

Once your kindling gets going you are going to want lots of kindling. Kindling should be small pencil-sized sticks that can be placed on top of that fire. These need to be dry. If you make it this far you are going to have a fire.

These are the core components of all fires but they are not a guarantee that you are going to be able to keep that fire going. Fires like things like patience and airflow. They dont like to be smothered or wet. Its up to you to manage that and slowly start adding larger fuel.

Top 10 Prepper Group Rules For After SHTF

This is the latest in a series of thought exercises that have been done by myself, Prepper Logic and The Lord Humungous.  We have recently been doing a monthly live chat on Youtube and decided to come up with a topic and then have each person go and make videos on the same topic and then come back later and chat about the differences with the audience.  These rules are not meant to fit for your situation but can hopefully act as a spring board for your own thought exercises to establish rules that would be suit your situation and your group.  Feel free to print this post as a .pdf file and include in in your emergency binder if you find it useful!
This list of “rules” is created based on a situation where the group has decided to “Bug In” at the group leader’s property.  The group is composed of four to six families.  A council is formed from a leader from each family.  The council is an advisory board and a mechanism to share the thoughts and desires of the group and to perform conflict resolution among the group. The council will also be responsible for work shifts, guard schedules, patrol schedules, and smaller group decisions aiming towards the goal of self governance so that fewer and fewer decisions have to be made by the group leader.  The impactful decisions, tactical and strategic decisions will be done with advisement from the council, but the group leader will have final say and authority on all decisions.

Prepper Group rules:

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Protect innocent life.
Look for opportunities to build community relationships; but not at the expense of the group or group OPSEC.
Scavenge only if the property has been abandoned (owners left or dead).  When possible, scavenged items should be used for charity to build trust and relationships with others.
Everyone pulls their weight.
Always make sure to notify the council where you are going and what you are doing.
Never leave home without a firearm, a radio and a buddy. Never leave the property without two buddies, radios, long guns, pistols and body armor/ plate carriers / ammo, etc.
You are free to leave and take all of your property whenever you please.  But you will not be allowed back in the group once you leave.  Any scavenged food / gear will broken up proportionally.
Mutinous behavior, theft, rumors, gossip and back biting type activity will not be tolerated.  Grievances should be up channeled to the council for resolution.  If a resolution cannot be found, the group leader and the council will determine if exile is needed for one party or both.
This is not a Democracy.  Final authority in all decisions rests with the group leader.  Responsibilities may be delegated accordingly (medical, tactical, etc).  The council is an advisory body.  However, when lives are at stake a unanimous vote of the council can override the group leader, provided that the threat is not imminent.
Bonus: Any decision to take on new members must be by a unanimous vote of the council and group leader.

In the days I spent with Selco not only did we record a lot of audio interviews and eat a lot of Cevapi (that’s meatballs usually with onions and some bread), we also went to some places Selco has been to during the war or places that were similar enough to give me an idea of how things looked.

In this video we visit a building that was abandoned right before the fighting started. The family never came back. Selco just shows me a few things that would have been useful for him. It is not a real lesson like the home defense video we have in our course area but just something I thought might be interesting to see.

It is hard to imagine how primitive everything can become in no time but this video will give you an idea what kind of “treasures” people sometimes fought and died for.

In one of the interviews Selco describes how he entered a house and another guy who was also looking for resources and useful things entered at the same time.

They both just saw each other, froze for a moment and after they realized the other person is not going to shoot, slowly left the building. He did not go back to that building in case the other guy might have returned. Not worth dying for a bit of firewood that night.

A different world, a different way of thinking and that is one of the reasons why I believe understanding Selco’s point of view on a lot of survival related things is so valuable.

It is hard to imagine what complete chaos and anarchy would be like and how far desperate humans would go to survive, so I’m grateful that Selco shares his experiences and is one of the few who went through something that bad and is still willing to talk about it.

[flashtag path=”https://shtfschool.com/imgs/housetour1.mp4″ image=”https://shtfschool.com/community/splash.jpg”]

Selco made use of everything he could to survive the war and where others today see just trash he sees something useful. We all prepare that we never have to sift through rubble to find what we need but it is good to prepare your mind that when all plans and all preparations fail it might come to that.

I will post a video of a tour through one of the buildings on the frontline in the course area in a few days. To get to them we even had to jump some fences (those ruins are still pretty dangerous because of falling stones so they are fenced in / barricaded). After reading about Selco’s experience it is pretty bizarre to see those buildings where Selco passed through at night with huge holes knocked in the walls, holes for snipers, old sand sacks and so on.
