If SHTF, do you know how to patrol your base? Tips for proper patrolling techniques

If you have military experience, you’re probably familiar with basic infantry tactics. These usually cover the essentials of patrolling techniques, such as the do’s and don’ts of “moving with a purpose through various terrain.”

But if you’ve never served in the military, there’s no need to fret. Should you feel the need to read up on how you can move from point A to point B and how to evade those who may wish to harm you, please keep reading this article.

Those who have military experience know what it’s like to have to traverse towns and villages on foot. This may often involve tense situations where you’re never entirely sure of what’s lurking around the next corner or if there’s anyone hiding down the street.

Since most cities are full of “multi-story buildings, street-level and below-street-level rooms, and passageways,” it can be difficult to travel between destinations safely. However, when you’re keeping watch in rural areas or in the woods, your approach to dealing with hidden enemies will definitely change. If you’re in a wooded area, potential attackers will find it easier to conceal themselves, especially if they’re familiar with the landscape.

Keep in mind that patrolling techniques are often the same despite the kind of terrain you are in. Always practice the following: (h/t BioPrepper.com.)

  • Plan your route — Do this before you go on patrol so you know where you’re headed. But once you start patrolling, you still have to plan the route as you go along. Brief everyone in your patrol before you head it.
  • Always protect the lead element — If you’re about to cross the road, don’t let everyone cross en masse. Navigate areas in a single file or go in pairs, and leave someone at the crossing point so they can give you cover fire if the need arises. When it’s their turn to cross, whoever’s already on the other side of the road should also be ready to provide them with cover.
  • Prepare for the unexpected — Plan for all kinds of possible obstacles in your way. Even if you know it’s going to be a short trip, bring water rations anyway. It’s better to be over-prepared than to be caught off guard.

What to do when SHTF

Sponsored solution from the Health Ranger Store: Lab-verified Nascent Iodine solution is a dietary supplement that provides your body with supplemental iodine to help protect your thyroid during radiation exposure. Nuclear accidents such as Fukushima (or nuclear war) can expose your body to radioactive iodine-131, a dangerous radioisotope. Pre-loading your system with stable iodine occupies the iodine receptor sites on your organs, causing your body to naturally expel radioactive iodine you may have been exposed to through air, food, water or milk products. This defensive strategy is recommended by nearly all health authorities, worldwide, including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Discover more at this link.

  1. Keep your equipment updated and in good condition — Don’t wait until the last minute to check if your bug out vehicle, weapons, and supplies are properly maintained. You never know what’s going to happen so it’s always better to prepare in advance. Keep everything in working order, and make sure your gear can carry you through different SHTF scenarios.
  2. Delegate tasks — If you’re part of a team, there’s no need to run yourself ragged. Let them in on your plans, and try to assign people tasks that suit their skill sets.
  3. Go through your plans — Plans are only effective if everyone knows them to a “T.” Review them with the whole team so you can resolve any possible hindrances immediately. Practice tests so you have your bases covered.
  4. Review your process and your progress — Is your current process the most effective way of doing a certain task? When you have the time, check if there’s a way to improve your process and your progress.

The currency of our world is changing just like everything else. Being so wrapped up in life it’s hard for us to understand these changes as they happen.

Bitcoin jumped to again and it looks like that could be in for a rebound, as well.

his is a monumental and, somewhat, terrifying rise in price. It speaks to what is happening in our world of currency. The dollar is not going to be the ultimate way to pay in the near future. The truth is gold and silver could play a huge roll in this as well.

As commodities like oil rise, you will see a rise in metals as well. Are you thinking about alternative currencies in the case of a collapse? Now is the time. While bitcoin has its benefits I cannot help but worry about an EMP and what happens to bitcoin wealth then.

What’s the Economic Deal?

The job numbers are off the charts. People are working but the economic futures and confidence in loans is changing the way people feel about economic conditions around the world. The effects of China and US trade wars have not been fully felt.

That uncertainty doesn’t help things.

Buy Now?

The big question is: With the rally in price is now the time to buy gold and silver? Silver is higher than it has been in years. Gold is on the uptick, too!

You have to be honest about your intentions here. Are you buying silver and gold as a hedge against a financial collapse or are you looking to make a profit on gold and silver?

If Americans finally face the power of hyperinflation, everyone without gold and silver will be affected profoundly. That is the gamble of all the preppers and survivalists buying precious metals.

After watching recent events unfold and speaking to family and friends, my wife and I decided to start prepping. Preparedness is a big part of our lives now and I would be honored to share some knowledge with you. Here at SHTF Prepping & Homesteading Central we gather the best prepping, survival, homesteading and DIY articles from around the web.

Fire is one of those survival skills that fall into the big three.

Fire, shelter, and water are three things that you should address at the onset of any survival situation. You might think it’s strange that I don’t put food in there. The truth is, you can go quite a while without eating.

Most Americans have some extra pounds to live off of. It’s important that you understand without water you will die in days. Without shelter, you will die from the elements. Without fire, you will likely not be able to drink water or stay warm in your shelter.

There are many ways to build the perfect fire kit. We are going to look at what you need to create your perfect fire kit.

There are many types of tinder but I like to focus on a couple of things in a good fire kit. One of the best types of tinder is free dryer lint. Pack a huge Ziploc of it in your kit! It’s free and any Ferro rod is going to spark it.

You should also learn how to source fatwood as it can be found, scraped and sparked to make fire.

You should also carry a high-quality survival knife as that can process things like bark into more tinder from nature.

Spark

Your spark or flame can come from a number of sources. You see, it’s not about having a certain tool to spark or start a fire but you need one and you need to use it a lot.

These are all great ways to start a fire and these are methods that are cheap and easy!

Its also good to have a few things that sustain your fire if you are having trouble getting it going. Things like compressed paper fire starters or shredded paper and wax in wax cups or petroleum dipped cotton balls are all examples of this.

Fire is essential!

The men and women who cage fight for a living are by far some of the toughest people amongst us.

There is no getting around the fact that cutting weight, rigorous training and facing off against another trained assassin takes an iron will.

Not to mention if you do lose it happens in front of hundreds of thousands if not millions of people. There is much we can learn about the will and the will to survive from these fighters.

Their survival instinct is pulsing when they step into that cage and there are some serious lessons that can be learned from watching the human-animal under this type of pressure. This article is a unique take on survival skills and how they relate to mixed martial arts.

Big muscles are one thing but being able to go and go and go without getting tired is very important. When you have the endurance you have a skill that affects every step of your life. From dealing with work to raising kids and even prepping. You can just go longer and be more focused.

The Importance of Skills

Having real fighting skills and skills in martial arts like Muay Thai, BJJ and boxing are very important. Wrestling is also a big deal when it comes to self-defense. These real skills go a long way. You have to know how to fight in order to know how to fight.

As well as knowing how to fight you also need to practice handling other people with these skills. You have to know how a full-grown man will respond to your power and your presence when you lock up. Moving a full-grown person, how you want, is not easy. If you get good at it you are going to be a serious force!

Puerto Rico: What It’s Really Like After the SHTF

SHTF just doesn’t seem to stick. Short term SHTF is something that many people are involved in on the coasts and things like that. It’s a big deal! We are talking about things like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires.

These short term SHTF scenarios offer the average American a peek into the world of disaster. Hopefully, this stirs them to start prepping.

Puerto Rico lived through tremendous times after hurricane Maria. What was it really like living through SHTF in Puerto Rico? There were some very important things that happened and they are tied in with life after any major disaster.

Supply Chain

The supply chain is disrupted due to all sorts of damage to infrastructures like bridges and roads. Not to mention the suppliers and retailers themselves could be damaged. This is why its so important to have preps stored in the home. You might not be able to travel and you would not be able to depend on local stores to have the resources you need.

Remember the infamous water drop? America set a tremendous amount of water. There were cases upon cases left on a runway and with no plan to distribute them to the people of Puerto Rico, they just sat there! All of that water was stranded by issues with transportation.

This is another problem that could be affected by the supply chain. Transportation of aid resources can also be compromised.

YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN!

True SHTF means you are on your own! That is why we prep. We do not want to be the people who are all alone out there and cannot affect our outcomes. You do not wanna be in lines for water or food.

Prepping is a means to avoid the outcomes of true SHTF. The people of Puerto Rico have felt the sting. Lets learn from them!

After watching recent events unfold and speaking to family and friends, my wife and I decided to start prepping. Preparedness is a big part of our lives now and I would be honored to share some knowledge with you. Easily the best source of protein in a survival situation, fish are there for the taking. If the waters haven’t been poisoned beyond recognition you are going to have access to an incredible amount of protein via fishing.

Now, survival fishing is about a lot of things. It’s not as easy as buying any line and tossing any hook with any bait. You have to know your quarry to be most effective. Still, basic survival fishing knowledge will go a long way.

You should have basic fishing tackle and basic fishing knowledge. The other huge benefit of fishing is that you can leave a fishing rig or trap and work on other projects. Upon your return, you may find that you have dinner at the end of the line.

In other words, its a passive means of catching food and that can be a lifesaver in a survival situation.

Fish Traps

You might think that all of the fishing involves lines and poles! Well, that is just not true. Instead, we are going to be focusing on two methods that can be done without a traditional fishing tackle. These are important to know, too!

The first is the study of fishing traps. A traditional fishing Wier can provide you will all sorts of fish and can be made up of sticks or rocks or a combination of both.

The fishing Wier is an ancient fish trap that has fed people for a long time.

The green husks of the black walnut contain something called Juglone. If you crush these hulls up and boil them in the water you will create a mixture that will stun fish in a small body of water. If you know where they are you can dump this into the water and the fish will float to the top stunned. You just net them or scoop them out!

There are topics of fiery debate in the prepper world. One such debate is that of the prepper group.

Some people are bent on having the perfect group with the perfect skill set. In times of disaster and disorder, I think many people just find great solace in organization. People want to put things in their place.

I remember seeing a neighbor with their roof caved in from a tree and the husband was standing outside the home picking up his dogs mess in the yard. These things are hard to explain. The man was looking for order in the chaos. We can only pray to not be in such a position or to at least come out better on the other side.

What is your Prepper Group For?

When you start down the road of counting heads in your survival group you need to ask yourself some questions first. One of the biggest questions is: What is my survival group for?

Are you pooling skills? Maybe you are hoping to bugout together? The motivations are many and you should understand them before deciding how many people you need.

Strength in Numbers

The one things that are undeniable is that we have power in numbers. We also have security in numbers. When it comes to disaster and survival, these things are important! As preppers, we want to know that when the trouble comes we have answers.

You should not only have a sturdy survival group of about 10 people who are skilled preppers and have an ancillary skill but you should also recruit neighbors from your community to act in times of need.

While a prepper group can help with some tasks and make some things easier an entire community is truly needed to rebound from whatever the world throws at us.

I never imagined that I would be considering a hooved creature bedding down in my backyard. The idea of having a goat was just not something I thought possible in my urban homestead.

Another great homesteading topic that offers info on livestock. For many of us, the only thing that keeps us from keeping livestock is state regulations. It’s hard to argue with them in some cases because of how we live on top of each other now.

We also know at least one person who wouldn’t be the best caregiver for a goat. Still, America is seeing a resurgence in self-reliance and independence. I, personally, could not be happier.

Why do People Keep Goats?

Could it be the lawn mowing potential they carry or could it be the fact that they have incredible milk that can be used for many things? What about their zany personality. Goats can be very real comedians.

How far out of reach is a goat from your homestead or urban homestead? Have you approached your city zoning or even considered a goat for your property. While you might not be able to keep a horse or pigs, you might be surprised about the answer you get on your desire to keep a goat.

No Permit Needed?

A few years ago I was inspected for my chicken permit. Here in Virginia, you need a permit and inspection to keep chickens.

When my area was being inspected by Animal Control the man doing the inspection just casually mentioned

“You dont need a permit to keep goats. Nope. Permit for chickens but you can keep a goat if you wanted.”

At that moment I went from not being a goat person to really giving it some thought. Operating an urban homestead, I never really considered being prepared for milk production with a goat! Sometimes you just need to dig a little deeper.

In a collapsed world you may feel powerless alone.

If it is just you and your family against the consequent attacks of the disaster it will be tough way to  go. If you decide to get your community involved, you go from being one person to many and that always makes a difference.

What you must consider is how to plan out the best way to defend your neighborhood in the event of a disaster. Do you have any idea how to set up a perimeter? Can you be a leader when things get ugly in your neighborhood?

Understanding the Borders

With all the talk about borders, you have to understand that if you are going to defend something you need to understand what it is and the border or perimeter of it. You and some neighbors should certainly determine this together. You need to define a defensible space.

Aid and Comms

You should also set up a number of locations that can be used to aid when things go bad in your neighborhood. If you are faced with an attack from outside you need places like an HQ, FIRST AID STATION and a COMMS location.

Map these locations now and be strategic with them.

While you might think that your plan is perfect, you have to understand that there are a number of things that could go wrong. You have to be prepared for failure.

You could face an overwhelming force and in that moment you are going to need a new plan. That plan is going to require that you have a plan to retreat. Now, that doesn’t mean that you are going to leave the community and never come back but a strategic retreat can save lives.

Plans for victory and defeat are crucial in base defense.
